Family Law

As a family law attorney in Seattle, Peter seeks amicable resolutions that recognize the need for ongoing relationships between divorced or separated couples and the children they share. He will guide his clients to resolution through mediation, arbitration, and negotiation, while remaining strong advocates for his clients.

Divorce – Dissolution of marriage, commonly known as divorce, involves mainly a division of property and debts, and care of other family members, specifically children. Washington is a no-fault divorce state, meaning that the court in the divorce action is required to divide the property and debts in a fair and equitable manner, without consideration of marital misconduct. During the past five years, Peter has represented many clients in Washington State divorce actions, including cases involving contested child custody, child support, parenting plans, spousal maintenance, QDRO distributions, and division of marital property and debt.

Child Custody – Child custody issues may occur in different number of cases such as divorce, relocation, parenting plan modifications, and paternity cases. The parenting plan addresses the child’s residential schedule and other parenting issues. Peter is experienced in family law actions involving both contested and agreed residential and parenting plan cases, including issues involving allegations of domestic violence and drug or alcohol abuse.

Child Support – When child custody is awarded, Washington State courts follow a schedule for child support based on the noncustodial parent’s net income in proportion to the total available net income of both parents, and the number of children. Although child support is paid by the noncustodial parent, both parents have the duty to provide financial support to the children. Other factors may also determine the child support payment based on special circumstances, including health insurance, day care expenses, and special medical or educational needs of the child.

Domestic Violence Protection Orders – Courts will enter a protection order protecting an adult or child when they have been or are in imminent danger of harm or violence. Peter is experienced in obtaining protection orders when someone is afraid that they or their children are in immediate danger. He is also experienced in defending against protection orders for people falsely accused of harming others.
